Kid-Friendly Dining in Truckee, CA

After a full day of adventure in Truckee, your kids have likely worked up quite an appetite. Luckily, finding a Truckee restaurant or dining spot that will appeal to everyone in the family is incredibly easy.  We’ve rounded up a few of our family favorites to try during your time in Truckee.

The Alder Creek Café in Tahoe Donner

With hiking and biking trails just outside its doors, The Alder Creek Café in Tahoe Donner is the perfect spot for healthy options your kids will love. Served on the outdoor patio, the cafe offers organic, seasonal and locally sourced meats and produce when possible. And for the adults, the Trailside bar offers a variety of unique drafts and bottled beers, as well as a diverse wine list with a number of eco-friendly choices. After a day on the trails, this is where you want to relax.

Truckee Tavern

For our food loving kids. Truckee Tavern offers an array of options the foodie kid will love. From their very own burger menu to fresh, housemade seasonal pastas (hint: a great way to sneak in those vegetables!). Kids and parents alike will especially love the corn syrup free, house-made sodas, in flavors such as creamsicle and cantaloupe.

Jax at the Tracks

Jax at the Tracks is the quintessential diner you love, with shakes, pies and a menu filled with your comfort food favorites. This cozy restaurant occupies a beautifully restored 1948 diner, and serves a fun menu of all the classics, with the addition of some unique creations, like the The All Day Addiction (Eggs, hash browns, Canadian bacon, avocado, and roasted tomatoes), Kobe meatloaf, and spicy mac 'n cheese.

Burger Me

Located on the main thoroughfare of downtown Truckee, Burger Me may be that convenient, kid-friendly food spot you've been looking for. Rated one of the best burger places in Lake Tahoe Area and featured on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives", Burger Me's burgers are made with all natural ingredients, no growth hormones or chemicals. The refurbished building with retro styling is great to hang out in, but you can also get your burgers to go and eat outside in the fresh mountain air in the Truckee Regional Park or find a spot near the Truckee River.

Pizza on The Hill

In Truckee, Tahoe Donner's Pizza on the Hill is the ultimate family friendly restaurant. For starters, what kid doesn't love pizza?!? The restaurant boasts TVs, outdoor seating, a play structure and an interactive playroom with dome hockey, foosball, shuffleboard and dart lanes, in addition to offering free movie nights, trivia, summer bingo and special events throughout the year.

Downhill Grille at northstar

Just as mid-mountain is base camp for skiers and snowboarders during winter, so it’s base camp for hikers and mountain bikers during summer. Guests can sit on Downhill Grille's patio, watching bikers speed down the mountain while enjoying dishes like a burger or cheese steak, or my personal favorite, the blackened ahi fish tacos. Then wash it all down with a margarita, of course. Additionally, Downhill Grille’s menu features items like the grilled wagyu dog and a number of different wraps and salads.

Special Event: Mountain Kids Cook-Off at Zephyr Lodge

The Mountain Kid’s Cook-Off is one of the most fun events at Northstar for both kids participating and their parents looking on. It’s the Top Chef of Northstar. Taking place August 6, the cook-off features 8 teams of young chefs between 8 and 12 years old competing for the right to go to the final on the main stage of Northstar's Autumn Food & Wine Festival.
