5 Best Pit Stops on Interstate 80
There's only one way to get to Truckee from the San Francisco Bay Area, and that's the well-known, Interstate 80. To make the most out of this 3 - 4 hour drive, we suggest stopping at some of our favorite establishments along the way for a beverage and bite to eat.
What's your favorite stop along Interstate 80?
Ikeda's is part country market, part restaurant, and a whole lot of bakery. A classic Auburn pit stop on the way to Truckee, we never miss a stop at Ikeda's. If you are coming to Truckee for a holiday (4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) be sure to pick up at least a few of their signature pies, in every flavor imaginable. The restaurant serves up delicious meals like Dungeness Crab Leg sandwiches and Burgers with Garlic Basil Fries. We also like to grab a carton of peaches and their house-made hummus.
Go on a journey much farther than I-80 by visiting Chandos Tacos at one of their many locations in Sacramento, Citrus Heights, and Roseville. Tortillas are the heart of their craft – they make tortillas in-house using traditional recipes. Anything that goes inside those delicious corn tortillas is locally sourced and held to high-quality standards. We always stop for a couple of their delicious fish or carne asada tacos. The lines might be long, but the outdoor seating is pleasant and the horchata is tasty.
Obo’ is part of the Selland Family Restaurant group. We've enjoyed their other restaurants like Ella, The Kitchen, and Selland’s Market on numerous occasions, but lately we've been obsessed with their newest addition, Obo'. Serving up rustic Italian dishes in East Sacramento, close to midtown. The restaurant is casual and comfortable, but the extensive menu is anything but. The menu features monthly specials based on the seasonality and a menu of regular dishes like Bucatini Clam and Sausage and the super yummy Prosciutto Arugula Pizza. Their $25 Pasta Dinner for Two special also includes a bottle of wine.
Auburn Ale House holds a special place in our hearts. It's obvious the brewery loves its home town and Truckee; they often show their philanthropic side, donating to non-profits like the High Fives Foundation in Truckee. Producing eight year-round beers and nine seasonal beers, their popular brews include the award-winning Gold Digger IPA, Gold Country Pilsner, and Old Town Brown. We love stopping by for a pint of the Pilsner and a some uncommonly good pub grub.
Mt Vernon is a small, family-owner winery in the hills of Auburn. We first heard of the winery from their numerous awards by the Auburn Journal (“Best of the Best” 15 years in a row and consecutive medals from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition). But we fell in love with Mt. Vernon when we visited it in person! Even though it has such great recognition, the staff and location are humble. If you stop by, definitely take a tour, they've got an awesome "wine cave", beautiful grounds, and a comfortable tasting room. They specialize in many foothill grapes like Old Vine Zinfandel, Syrah Port, Barbera Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gold Country Nectar, and a Sur-lie aged barrel fermented Chardonnay. The winery frequently holds events and special tastings, but their normal tasting room hours are Thursday through Sunday. Beware, you might just fall in love!
