How to Après Ski in Truckee
Whether you partake in snow sports or not, you can definitely partake in the Après Ski. At the resorts and in Truckee there are endless ways to spend your afternoon and evening. We’ve narrowed the list down to the places and traditions that we enjoy year after year.
Get Your S’mores On At Northstar
Who doesn’t love s’mores and who doesn’t love free s’more?! Every day at 3:30pm Northstar’s S’more chefs (yes, that’s a real thing) give out s’more in the Village. We’ve made this a tradition because the kids love it and there is so much to do in the Village besides s’mores. Either post skiing or just for a fun afternoon, we’ll go to the Village where we can enjoy delicious beverages from the Cabana Bar, relax by the fire pits, ice skate, or go shop. Afterwards, there are so many great dinner options without having to drive anywhere.
Sip a Manhattan at Manzanita
You won’t even have to leave the ski hill to get your Après started at the Manzanita. The mid-mountain location at the Ritz Carlton is perfect for skiers and boarders at Northstar California. The Barrel Aged Manhattan at Manzanita is one of the best we’ve ever had. It’s made with Barrel Aged Woodfod Reserve Whiskey, Dolin Sweet Vermouth, and Angostora Bitters. It’s the best way to warm up after those chilly runs!
Wine-d Down with a Glass at Truckee River Winery
Right off Highway 267, our beloved mountain winery is the perfect place for a snack and a glass, or two, of your favorite. While we think of the Truckee River Winery as a summer hang out, it’s the perfect stop for winter Après. Besides their amazing selection of wine (award-winning Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Gris, just to mention a few), they serve hot mulled wine for chilly winter afternoons. They’ve also got tapas and artisan deli items to snack on and cozy fireplaces, extra seating for larger groups, and board games to entertain your posse.
People Watch at Mellow Fellow’s Fire Pits
Mellow Fellow has one of the largest patio spaces in Downtown Truckee. If you’re willing to bundle up and get cozy by the fire, you can enjoy one of the 40 beers on tap, a glass of wine, or their delicious grilled sausages while people watching on a busy weekend evening. If the cold is too much to handle, sitting inside is nothing of a compromise. You’ll soon see why this is local favorite, and one of our favorite to grab a quick pint. Grab a board game from the back or catch football on one of the TVs. And if you’re new to town, the patrons are very welcoming – we bet you’d leave with a few new friends!
For Guilty Pleasures Grab a Table at Old Town Tap
After a long day of skiing, we always crave junk food. That’s why we love going to Old Town Tap for our Après dinning. Their menu is a sophisticated take on some of our guilty pleasures. Grab the Fried Cheese Curds with chinata honey and herbed buttermilk or share the Meatball and Polenta dish with plenty of parmesean. You absolutely must get a pizza while you’re here. We haven’t tried one we don’t like! Come early to enjoy one of their craft cocktails, you won’t be sorry.
