Interview with Mountain Valley Meats in Truckee, CA

If you’ve never thrown some fresh-made, potsticker sausages from Mountain Valley Meats on the barbecue during your summer parties, you haven’t been doing summer right. Truckee’s local “Chef Owned, Chef Inspired Butcher Shop” was started by friends Jess Curtis and Brandon Uresky after a combined 35 years in the service industry and it currently stands as Truckee’s only butcher shop. We wanted to take a deeper dive behind the delicious shop to see why the founders decided to open shop.

Mountain Valley Meats makes marinades and carries high quality meats, prime cuts, and holiday specialties. However, we love them for their sausages. They make nearly 50 specialty sausages, like Blue Cheese and Pear and Roasted Garlic, Ricotta, and Basil, that they rotate daily. And every one that we’ve tried is outstanding. This might be because they “use fresh ingredients in our sausages and marinades,” explains Curtis. “Everything we do is small batch and hand made in house.” With nothing but five-star reviews on Yelp, it seems like Curtis and Uresky were made for this.

Before Mountain Valley Meats was born, both Uresky and Curtis completed culinary school and met while working at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. Stuck on what to do next, the opportunity to make sausages for restaurants came up but there were few local places that supplied high quality meats. Mountain Valley Meats shortly followed.

The inspiration to create Mountain Valley Meats came from home: from the needs of a growing town, from the community within it, and from the friends’ personal life. “Brandon's father Bob, who passed away earlier this year,” started Curtis, “his generosity, kindness for others and positive outlook are something Uresky tries to achieve every day. His enthusiasm for helping us open the shop is something Brandon will always cherish.” Curtis was also inspired by her father. “My father, Mike, is the one that taught me how to cook and be passionate about it,” explains Curtis. “I have become more adventurous in life and cooking and love to spend my time with him eating and discovering new things.”

Inspiration and love has gotten the duo far, but “the support from all of these people are the reason we are still here.”
