What's Going on this September in Truckee

 

Summer might be over for some, but September is hasn’t slowed down a bit! This fall, Truckee’s Cultural District is starting a Fall into Art series that features TONS of local artists, makers, and events. Don’t worry, we’ve got a full schedule here so that you don’t miss any of the action.

There’s more than art going on this month. From wing contests to guided, historical hikes, there’s so much going on. Enjoy September with these awesome events happening all over Truckee and Tahoe.

TOAST to the end of summer at the 4th Annual Craft Beer and Food Truck Festival at Homewood Mountain Resort on the 2nd. The all-ages festival features local craft vendors, delicious craft beers, and FREE live music from The Coffis Brothers for an afternoon of good times. EAT at Squaw Valley’s Guitar Strings vs. Chicken Wings on the 6th. Flock to Squaw Valley from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. for a night of epic chicken wing proportions! Bands and restaurants will square off against each other to raise funds and awareness for the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science. Attendees will receive tokens at the entrance allowing them to place votes for their favorite wings and favorite band. Beer and drink specials will also be offered. Learn more about the event here.

HIKE alongside performance art, ephemeral sculpture, and literary art pieces at this year’s Trails and Vistas Art Hikes on the 7-8th. Guides will lead three-hour long guided interactive hikes winding through 12 site-specific art installations. Located in the majestic Sierras, Trails & Vistas plays host to a collective experience where art, nature and audience intersect. Learn more about the event here.

FLOAT to the finish line, or sink trying! Either way, the 4th Annual Wooden Boat Challenge is a great event for the family. Come out to Commons Beach in Tahoe City on the 14th for food, kids activities, a beer garden, live music and a once in live-time competition. Teams of four have three hours to build a boat by hand, without power tools. Then test their wit and skill by racing them on Lake Tahoe. Register your team here.

EXPLORE Donner Summit with local historians on interpretive Donner Party Hikes the 14-15th. As you trace the steps of the emigrants, imagine the clip-clop of oxen and the rumble of wagons of the countless pioneers who scaled the mighty Sierra Nevada in search of a better life. Choose from one of seven hikes ranging from 3.5 to 6 miles with varying degree of difficulty. See petroglyphs, railroad snowshed tunnels or the China Wall. Stroll through meadows or discover hidden Sierra lakes. In the afternoon enjoy a hamburger lunch and afternoon speaker. Register for your hike and learn more here.

CELEBRATE Oktoberfest at Squaw Valley on the 21st. This annual FREE event transforms the Village at Squaw Valley into the largest Bavarian playground in North Lake Tahoe, complete with authentic German beer, delicious food, Bavarian music, the ever-popular Oktoberfest Games and plenty of family fun. This year, enjoy live entertainment by Joe Smiell's 20 Piece Bavarian Band and the Almenrausch Schuhplattler Dance Troops throughout the day. Learn more about the activities here.
