Bringing More Than Art to the Community

Every summer, Truckee, Tahoe, and the local summits are blessed with the artistic curation of Nancy Tieken Lopez and the awesome non-profit, Trails and Vistas. “Trails and Vistas presents a truly unique experience in environment through art,” explains Tieken Lopez. The events allow visitors to “experience music, dancers, and art in one of the most beautiful stages imaginable — the Sierra Nevada.”

Tieken Lopez founded Trails and Vistas for many reasons, but mostly to help enrich the lives of local and those visiting Truckee. Pairing the arts and outdoors was a no brainer for Tieken Lopez; sharing it with the community she loves was just the natural progression. Hosting the non-profit’s annual event in the great outdoors helps people of all ages “promote an appreciation of the performing and visual arts, builds pride of place, and inspire environmental stewardship of the Sierra Nevada.” We agree. The unique combination of art and the outdoors is one of the many reasons why Truckee was designated a California Cultural District.

She was initially inspired by a personal connection with another artist. Tieken Lopez says, “as an artist interested in art in the environment, I started taking out my bronze sculptures and river poems to leave out in nature for people to find. The river poem of 20 large and small stones were arranged in a riverbed waiting to be discovered. The magic happened when a random stranger took all of the engraved stones, but left me only ONE stone... As the artist, I was so excited to visit the riverbed of poems and see only one stone left for me to find, and it was so clever of this random hiker to leave the stone that read "Is No Other". To this day I still do not know who took all of the stones and left me just one. This art happening inspired me to create the art hikes one year later.”

Now 2019, the inspiration still comes from her artistic peers and building community, but has unfurled into a beloved event that “unite[s] art, environment, and community to create relationships between the artists, the attendees and the local and world community with art and nature events.”

“We are proud to build community with our art and dance workshops, and our signature art hikes,” says Tieken Lopez. Put Trails and Vistas, happening September 7-8th, on your list for this summer’s activities—you won’t be sorry! Until then, learn more about the non-profit online on their website, Facebook, and Instagram.
