Getting to Know Uncorked Truckee
As you stroll through Historic Downtown Truckee, you might miss Uncorked. The shop itself is narrow and the intoxicating smell of chocolate from the nearby Sweets Handmade Candies shop probably distract you. If this is a familiar story, you’ve been missing out. Uncorked is a great place to catch happy hour, to start the night off at, or to grab a bottle to go. We had the pleasure of speaking with Co-Owner and GM, Chris Barkman to get a little insight into our favorite Downtown wine stop.
Uncorked Truckee is just one of the chain’s four stores in the North Tahoe region (the other three live in the Village at Squaw Valley, in Tahoe City, and the last is Petra, the restaurant and wine bar in the Village at Northstar) and was inspiration by, you guessed it, the divine drink itself. “Without the magic that happens in the bottle,” explains Barkman, “we wouldn't have this beverage that connects people across all levels in life.” Uncorked certainly carries a wide range of wine to please each drinker’s delights. The shop often changes the wine they stock, so it always feels like there’s a little surprise waiting for us there. Whatever they stock, they make sure to have “the very best representation within each given category,” Barkman says, with a great focus on “small production, naturally farmed wines from California and key regions from around the globe.”
If this sounds a bit intimidating, don’t let it be! Their friendly and knowledgeable staff will be able to make great recommendations for the novice and experienced wine drinker alike and, as Barkman says, it truly is “a gathering place for the community.” Though the impressive labels, soft jazz, and dim lighting all signify utter elegance, it’s easy to feel relaxed and laid back here. That’s really the whole idea behind Uncorked: with a vision of the community coming together to enjoy wine. When asked what his favorite part of running Uncorked is Barkman replied, “being a part of the community and sharing experiences with the great people who live here and travel here.” Truth be told, there’s nothing quite like sitting back and drinking wine with great company.
